The Premier Record of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Claims the Top Spot.

Initially, this work could seem more like an arduous university challenge than the latest popular music record from an artist whose last single was a collaboration with a global pop icon. Broken across 4 different movements and sung in thirteen tongues, we have a breathtaking orchestral-influenced work investigating female mystique, spiritual ascent, and physical change, frequently by way of the lens of various female saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic treated with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—soars heavenward on this record, buoyed by the constant sound of a full orchestra and contributions from an award-winning songwriter among an extensive roll call of collaborators. Its sheer daring alone renders the work of other artists look quite laughable.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

The fact that Lux succeeds in transcend overly intellectual posturing is nearly miraculous, and full praise going to Rosalía. Although it's not the first time album to alchemize the past with modern styles, the stakes are much greater here, with the balancing act more dramatic. The element that truly raises this fourth album, beyond its multilayered tunes, rich compositions, and inherent drama, proves to be a core spirit of joy. Much like the legendary artist at her height, you find a wondrous sense to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener up in its whirlwind. When she is breaking your heart apart, the listener nevertheless want to be alongside her for the journey.

A Signature Moment of Joy

This exuberant energy shines brightly on a stirring Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy over more than four moments. Then, everything falls away, to reveal there's a gleeful laugh followed by a comment prior to a hilariously over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes in like cartoonish force. The track immediately shifts to the frenetic track featuring galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than Björk.

"The magic of this album lies in the listener never exactly understand—or even wish to predict—where you will go to next."

Nearly every track concludes at a totally different point from how it began. A track explores the transient nature of celebrity over a delicate orchestration before collapsing in electronic cacophony. Another, a song that recalls the artist's previous trap-infused work begins off moody and sinister, with menacing beats, until sudden traditional rhythms and a heavenly chorus enter to smooth the song's rough edges.

The Balance Of Art & Accessibility

Another crucial achievement of Lux is navigating the gap between bold innovation and broad accessibility. It is little coincidence that it has become her highest-charting release to break into the upper reaches of major markets: at its core a collection of truly undeniable pop songs. A song sung primarily in English builds on a refrain that seems to gather more and more nagging hooks while it spirals upward. That trick is repeated by another powerful ballad that grows and contracts, intertwining multiple melodies as an intricate weave.

  • A waltz-like song seduces via its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares the cultural impact of other breakup songs, lambasting a former lover labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals have a sharp smile, like a fairy-tale figure concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist scale, a hungry grasp for high Art in an era of looming AI-generated sameness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of sublime elevation, crafting an over-the-top drama that masterfully controls its own inherent ridiculousness. It is a deep source of buried gems that requires time to fully explore but doesn't seem like a chore. Where some major pop albums of the year seemed like a meager meal, Lux is a lavish banquet where the guests around the table, some tipsy on holy wine, flutter between discussions about historical saints, the profound feeling of heartbreaking grief, and common stories about useless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly creative practitioner.
